      Ann K. Sakai () first hiked in the mountains of Hawaii with former students of John Obata and is grateful for the generous help of local botanists through the years. She is a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Irvine, Irvine, CA, USA, and is an evolutionary ecologist who works on the evolution of plant breeding systems, with strong interests in conservation and restoration biology, particularly within the Hawaiian Islands.

      Martin Siegert is co-Director of the Grantham Institute, Imperial College London. He has undertaken research in Antarctic subglacial lakes for over 20 years, and is the Principal Investigator of the Subglacial Lake Ellsworth exploration programme. He was awarded the 2013 Martha T Muse Prize by the Tinker Foundation for his work in Antarctic science and policy.
